Immigration Debate

Assimilation and its discontents

In light of these changing attitudes and perceptions, sociologists Richard Alba and Victor Nee have chosen this moment to reexamine the idea of assimilation in their new study Remaking the American Mainstream: Assimilation and Contemporary Immigration. [dagger] Alba and Nee begin with an examination of the historical patterns of assimilation and acculturation among earlier groups of European and Asian-American immigrants (Japanese and Chinese who entered America mainly in the late 1800s). By looking at a variety of indicators including language acquisition, education, and economic progress, they show that “the social foundations for ethnic distinctions” among these immigrants had been largely “whittled away” by the third generation. While granting that most scholars do not fully understand how this assimilation took place, the signs were apparent: By the third generation, English “monolingualism” was nearly universal among European Americans and Asian Americans. Ethnics had largely moved out of inner-city immigrant enclaves and into mixed-ethnic suburbs, and rates of college education among their children and grand-children were equal to that of the larger population.
