Citizenship Requirements – How They Work

Are you interested in becoming a US citizen, you must familiarize yourself with the requirements for citizenship. It can be a time consuming process, filled with paperwork and probing questions about your private life. It is in your best interest to learn as much as possible before making your final decision.

If there is one biological parent who is a United States citizen, then the child can be considered for citizenship by birth. A child can also apply later in life if their parents become citizens and they are below the age of eighteen. When parents are citizens of different countries, some residency issues might need to be addressed for their children. The situation is easiest when the child is in the custody of their US citizen parent. For other circumstances, look for more information online concerning specifics.

Additionally, the US citizen parents should fill out and file the required paperwork. If this parent has died, a US citizen grandparent or legal guardian may apply for the child, but only within 5 years of the parent’s death. Adopted children may be naturalized through the Immigration and Nationality Act, visit the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website for more information.

Adults who desire citizenship must already have held a permanent residence green card for a minimum of 5 years, with few exceptions. Within this time, it is expected that you have spent at least 30 months of that time residing in the US. Then you will need to prepare for the test. It is essential that you have knowledge of United States government and history (civics). Your reading, writing, and speaking skills will also be assessed.

If you meet the necessary requirements, then go ahead and fill out the paper work and get ready for the naturalization test. When your application is accepted you will be fingerprinted at a USCIS facility and interviewed by an officer, this will include questions about your background as it applies to your application. Then you will need to prove your language skills by accurately reading some provided material, and writing a sentence correctly from a provided list. A majority out of the ten questions on the civics test must be answered correctly.

There are a few exceptions to the general naturalization requirements if you meet certain criteria. These exceptions are for applicants who are employed in selected overseas careers, are over the age of fifty, people with physical or developmental disabilities, and those married to current US citizens.

If you don’t pass, you can arrange for another interview to happen 60 to 90 days later. There are plenty of study materials on the internet specifically made for helping you pass the civics test. Make sure you are prepared to meet the requirements for citizenship.
